He's Not Embarrassed By Me Yet!

A few weeks ago, I taught the Bible lesson for Firecracker's Wednesday night class.  I then taught it again the next week.  The next Wednesday Firecracker asked me if I was going to teach his class again.  I told him that it was just coincidence that I taught two weeks in a row, and that while I will teach it again sometime, it wouldn't be that week.  He got all bummed out and told me how much he liked it when I taught his class.

Talk about high praise!!!  My 8 year old isn't embarrassed by me yet!!  This is something to celebrate, my friends!

Have a great day!

Christmas Hangover

I love Christmas.  It's my favorite time of the year.  I love it for different reasons as an adult than I did as a kid.  Now I get to watch my munchkins open their presents and see them get all excited about their new toys.  It's truly awesome to be the Mom to these two little people.

That being said, I'm so over them having all this new stuff.  We spent 30 minutes (roughly) reading the Christmas story from Luke 2, talking about what we're thankful for, praying and then opening presents.  The rest of the waking hours yesterday were spent either putting together new toys, opening new toys or going when the kids said, "Hey, Mom, come see ________ ."  By 6 o'clock I was sooooo over it.  When I finally looked up, what felt like 34 billion hours later, it was 8 and mercifully bedtime.

Today will be better.  It has to be better, or I'm going to lose my ever loving mind.

Oh, and happy second best day of the year!! (It's my birthday today!!)

Have a great day!

Happy Jesus' Birthday!!

While all the trappings of Christmas are wonderful, let's not forget that JESUS is the reason for the season!

Have a Merry Christmas!!

So Close to Christmas!

I love Christmas.  However, this year the season has just seemed to zoom past me.  I feel like it's almost over before it even started.  This being said, I'm woefully behind!

I should be done with all my holiday stuff, you know baking cookies, buying presents, wrapping presents, shipping presents etc.  However, I'm not.  I'll be working double time for awhile to catch up.

Have a Merry Christmas!

Generous

Last night our church had what we call "Share Store".  The way it works is for 3 months the kids that come to church earn "shares" (aka points) by learning verses, bringing their Bibles and coming to church.  Share Store is when we set up a little store for the kids to come and spend their shares.

This was Firecracker's first time having Share Store with the older kids.  He was so excited.  When we got in the van to come home I asked him if he got some good stuff.  He said he got some good stuff, but then he said he spent some of his shares on presents for the Hubs, Sweet Pea and myself.  What a sweet boy!  Spending his hard earned shares to buy gifts for the family.  I melted. =)

Have a great day!

Pictures

I was just perusing the blog and I started looking at the pictures that I've posted.  While they're perfectly good pictures, they're woefully out of date.  I mean Sweet pea was about 3 months old in that picture, and she's now 6...  Maybe I'll update those soon... Or not, I mean who doesn't love pictures of adorable babies?

Have a great day!

The Sum of All Knowledge

According to their children, (at least the children under the age of 12, because you know that once a kid becomes a teen they know everything) parents are the sum of all knowledge.  I had never really thought about it like this until the other day Firecracker asked me what something was and I told him I didn't know.

He stared at me with a completely shocked expression and with an equally shocked voice said, "You don't know?!"  I'm fairly certain that it was on par with learning Santa Claus isn't real.  All at once I felt awesome that he had that much faith in my knowledge, and terrible that I've shattered the illusion.  I TOTALLY could've worked with that for much longer!

Maybe now he'll just assume we are the sum of MOST knowledge instead of all.....  Here's hoping!

Have a great day!

Generosity

The Hubs is generous nearly to a fault.  It appears that Firecracker has inherited this trait.  He has always been sweet and generous. (Now mind you, I'm not saying he is perfect in that regard.  No, he has plenty of times where he is selfish.)  That quality has showcased itself here recently in the form of cookies.

The other Sunday Firecracker's Sunday School teacher gave him a little tin of cookies, because he had been working so hard (on what I still am unsure.  He didn't give me specifics, but I was proud nonetheless.).  Firecracker offered the Hubs, Sweet pea and myself each some of them.  Then later that night, he decided that he needed to share some of them with his teachers.

Firecracker came home and made up four little snack baggies filled with cookies to share with his teachers.  He was only upset that I had eaten so many (they were small cookies, about an inch in diameter. So I ate several.  Don't judge me!) so he didn't have as many to share as he would have liked.

Sometimes Firecracker can be a stinker, and then other times he does things like this that show what a sweet spirit he has.

Have a great day!

My Minivan Prayer

Big Mama, our minivan, is showing her age.  She is a 2007.  We bought her in 2009.  She has been fantastic, even though before I had kids I swore up and down and sideways that I would NEVER drive a minivan.  I never desired it at all.  I figured if I needed a larger vehicle I'd get an SUV.

However, and I honestly don't remember how it all worked out, I ended up with Big Mama.  And I've loved her ever since!  The self opening and closing doors are one of my favorite things!  There are a few other things that I like about it for instance: I can haul up to 6 other people with me whenever I want to.  And with the size of my family that really is a HUGE plus.

Anyway, this is not a post about all the reasons I love my minivan.  Unfortunately, this post is about how Big Mama is on her last leg.  As we're driving down the road rockin' out to whatever songs we're listening to, she'll start to shudder.  That's right, folks, the transmission is giving way.  :(

This is saddening for multiple reasons: 1. As stated above I really love driving a minivan. 2. And probably most important, it's PAID OFF!

So my minivan prayer is, "God, please let Big Mama hold out 'til we can get another vehicle that will also hold 7, that will be a smokin' deal, and be reliable."

Have a great day!

A Near Miss

I used to be "that mom."  The one that went to every school field trip.  So, when the papers came home that said, "An adult must accompany the child on the field trip," I never batted an eye.

However, those days are gone.  I'm working again now, and while it's at the kid's school, I can't just take off whenever they have a field trip to attend.  Thankfully, Firecracker is old enough that his class doesn't require an adult to attend every field trip anymore.

The other day a note came home stating that Sweet pea's class was going on a field trip, but that a parent needed to accompany each child.  I spoke to the teacher about possibly allowing Sweet pea to go without me.  She said she would think about it.  After a few days, the teacher said she didn't think it would be fair to allow Sweet pea to attend when other kids wouldn't be able to if their parent didn't attend.  I totally understood this stance, but Sweet pea was heart broken.

It was the night before the field trip, and Sweet pea was sure she was going to get to go (even though I had told her she might not be able to).  I had to explain that if one of her aunts or uncles didn't go with her cousins she wouldn't be able to go.  She was heart broken. Many tears were shed. I felt terrible.

After Sweet pea had gone to bed, my sister texted me and said that by a twist of fate she was going to get to go after all.  (Previously she had said she wouldn't be able to go with her kids either, because she had to work.)  She got the day off and offered to take Sweet pea with her.

The morning of the field trip I got to give Sweet pea the good news.  She was SOOOO excited!  Auntie T saved the day.

Have a great day!

A Significant Loss

Recently, our assistant pastor turned in his resignation.  This is a huge loss to our church.  We don't fault him at all, he is following the call of God to another church in another state.

The Hubs and I are going to miss our assistant pastor and his wife.  They have become friends.  We've labored alongside them in the ministry and truly respect them.

Although we will miss them, and we envy their new church family.  We wish them well.  And we will be praying for them and their new ministry.

Have a great day!

Helen Keller Museum

Firecracker had learned about Helen Keller at school.  Some how he found out that her birth place was only a little ways away from my Father in law's house.  He made us promise that the next time we went up there we would try and go.  Well, we weren't planning on going up until November for thanksgiving like we do every year.  However, we made an unexpected trip up when we evacuated for Irma.  So we ended up going to the museum. It was really neat!
They had all kinds of things that I never even thought about a blind person using.  Like a scrabble board that has a raised waffle pattern so the pieces stay in place. And playing cards that had braille on them.

Apparently, Helen had a genius I.Q. she graduated from the sister college to Harvard and she studied in Italian, Greek, French and English!  It was a really enlightening trip.  Even the kids liked it, and of course it's always cool to put learning into action.

This picture wasn't one I intended on taking, but the lady that worked at the museum was insistent that I take the kid's picture in the dining room.  It was easier just to humor her than to fight it.

Have a great day!

Butter Smoothness

The Hubs has a thing about butter.  He can't stand it when the tub of butter isn't smooth.  For the last 10 years I have done my best to comply with this because I know how easy it is for pet peeves to drive you crazy.  I try to keep it looking something like this:
However, now we have children, and they are proud of themselves for doing things on their own.  Therefore, the butter often ends up looking like this:
The poor Hubs is destined to be annoyed with the butter tub until the kids move out.

Have a great day!

Girl's Night

A few weeks ago, the Hubs took Firecracker to the race track.  Since they were doing a boy's thing Sweet pea and I did a girl's thing.  We got all dressed up and I let her choose what restaurant we ended up at.  She chose Cracker Barrel.  So the two of us went to Cracker Barrel in our dress clothes.  We played checkers, and I spy while we waited for our food.  We had a good time.

Have a great day!

Uncomfortable

While traveling, Sweet pea sometimes sleeps.  Firecracker almost never sleeps, but Sweet pea will take pretty good naps.  What can I say, she's like her mama.  Anyway, she ends up in some of the weirdest positions.  Case and point:

Sand Bag Helpers

Since we were predicted to have Irma's wrath, the kid's and I went to fill sand bags.  The Hub's worked on the generator to get it up and running.  I called my dad to see if he'd come and help me fill sand bags.  I figured each kid could hold a bag open while my dad and I filled them.  It turns out my kids are TERRIBLE bag holders.  They kept pulling the bags mouths away, because they didn't want the dirt on them.  Finally, I got my dad to put one shovel full of dirt in one of the bags and they used little beach shovels to fill one.  In the time it took my dad, mom and I to fill 14 sand bags the munchkins had filled one about 2/3 of the way full.  Hey, every little bit helped.

The H Word

While we were at my Father in law's house with my brother in law, sister in law and their two kids, the kids were playing in the other room.  As happens when you have more than one kid in a room for any length of time the kids started fighting.  I went in to figure out what the problem was.

Firecracker was all upset saying about his cousin, "He said he h worded me!"

My nephew was all upset because he was insistent that he did not say that word.

At first I was thrown off until I realized Firecracker actually meant the word "hate" not the other h word. Ahhh I love the innocence of children.

Have a great day!

Evacuating

We were in Irma's direct path, so we decided to evacuate.  It was last minute, but we did at any rate.  We evacuated to my Father in law's house.  We were not the only ones that decided to evacuate to his house either.  My brother in law, his wife, their two kids and their two cats all evacuated to Dad's also.  Now, mind you my father in law lives in a little 1,000 sq ft house with 1 bathroom.

I'm not gonna lie, I was very nervous about how it would all work out, but it was better than I imagined.  Yes, it was crowded, but it wasn't as bad as I worried about.  Needless to say, we're all glad to be home.

Have a great day!

Mmmmm Lime Popcorn!

Ok, something you may not know about me is that I'm a lime lover.  Some people want lemon with their water.  I would rather have lime.  I love the lime flavored tortilla chips.

Ok, with this preface I jump into the post. The other day we had a movie night.  While I was at the store buying popcorn I discovered a new product: Skinny girl- lime and salt popcorn!  OH MY WORD!!!  It is fantastic!!! I LOVE IT!  So in case any of you are inclined to try it do it!  It's wonderful.

9-11

I will never forget where I was when I heard the awful news about the World Trade Center.  It was such a tragedy.  In one split second our America changed forever.

I also will never forget the camaraderie that followed.  Americans helping each other, loving each other and coming together for a cause.  People held hands, cried, prayed, gave their money and their time.  All this was done for virtual strangers.

In our worst moments we learned what our country and countrymen were made of.  And I'm proud to say that my country and countrymen are the best in the world.

I hope you all have a blessed day.  And do not forget to pray for those families that lost loved ones on this horrific day 16 years ago.

The Magic of Music

Sweet pea has always loved music.  Something about music soothes her.  It has always been that way for her.  She just loves it. If she doesn't know the words to a song she hums along with the melody.  If she's never heard the melody before she still tries to hum along.

The other day we were driving home and she was in a full blown homework meltdown.  (Apparently the page didn't look EXACTLY the way the teacher's example page did and this necessitated a hysterical crying jag.)  I tried to calm Sweet pea down several ways and nothing was working.  Finally, I turned on the radio.  Soon she was singing along with the song and homework was completed.  Just thinking about it makes me stop in awe.  Seriously, what in the world?  I've never been one that is soothed by music, but it works for her.

The thing is it's not a specific kind of music either.  No, just about any type of music will do.  (Well, I'm not a rap listener so I don't know if rap would have the same results)  But between the Hubs and I we listen to many different genres.  So far just about all of them have this same type of effect on her.  It's a wonder really.

Have a great day!

Movies

Most of you know that I struggle with depression and anxiety.  Some of the weirdest things cause me major anxiety.  I cannot go to the movies.  Think about it for a minute: everyone is in a big room facing forward completely engrossed in what's on the screen.  This seems to me to be the perfect recipe for a gunman.  No one is being vigilant, because come on it's the movies.  We don't go to the movies to think about bad stuff.  We go to the movies to submerse ourselves into a different world, a world where anything is possible.

Anyway, with this in mind, on Labor Day we had a movie night as a family.  I rented 2 movies, bought popcorn and Sweet pea insisted we make brownies.  It was a lovely evening.

Have a great day!

Rainbows

Out of the blue the other day Sweet pea looked at me and said, "Mommy, did you know that waterfalls get rainbows ready to bloom?"  Of course I told her I didn't know that, and then she went on her merry little way.  You may ask, "Were you looking at a rainbow or a waterfall?"  The answer to that is: no.  This was a completely random statement. So I'm now imparting Sweet pea's wisdom to you, you're welcome.

Worrisome Words

There are a few words in the English language that can strike much fear and trepidation into a parent's heart.  These words cause worry, anxiety, apprehension and concern to rocket through a parent with no regard to their heart's well being.  Oddly enough these same words coming from the same child can bring pride, joy, happiness and pleasure bursting forth in a parent's heart.  What could these words possibly be, you ask.  I'll tell you:

Look, Mommy/ Daddy, I did it all by myself!

These words could be accompanied by a marker mosaic on the side of a freshly painted wall, these words could come with the child parading about the house with their clothes on backwards and inside out, they may come along with a cup of milk that has been poured into til it is over flowing, or they may accompany a child's tied shoe.  No matter how they are uttered the child is incredibly proud of themselves.  It's us parents that have to worry which scenario will accompany these words.

The first week of school was many things: exhausting, good, interesting, exhausting, a solid start and exhausting.  All in all I'd say it was about as good of a first week of school as we could have asked for.  Now on to the next 39 weeks before summer vacation! Hahaha!

Girl Day

On Saturday the Hubs took Firecracker out for a boy day, so Sweet pea and I went to get pedicures once again.  Oh how she enjoyed herself!  She asked if we could get pedicures every day!  My Sis-in-law said if she wants that she'd better get a job! =)  Here's a pic of her enjoying herself and then a picture of our pretty toes!

After our pedicures we went and bought a Strawberry Shortcake movie, went home and popped popcorn and had a movie night.  It was a great day!

Lunches

I am all about making my kids self sufficient.  As a result they are packing their own lunches this school year.  Last year Firecracker was responsible for his own lunch but I packed Sweet pea's.  I was also lax about making the lunches the night before. So we'd always end up rushing to get it done in the mornings. This year we have started packing lunches the night before.  The other day Firecracker asked my sister, "Auntie T, did you know you can pack your lunch in the night time?!"  Apparently this is big news.

Designer Moms

I've discovered there is a breed of mother that can be called none other than "designer moms".  These mothers are decently easy to spot.  Just check for these signs:

* They wear clothes that don't have kid's snot on them.
* Their children don't have snot on them
* They tend to wear hip/ chic clothing (because they don't get kid snot on it)
* They have actually done their hair
* Their kid's hair is done (if it's a girl it's usually with a giant bow)
* They tell you that their kid eats only organic foods, as they watch your child eat a cheeto that has been on the floor for an indeterminate amount of time.
* Their children are usually signed up for 11 billion extra curricular activities.

These ladies seem so put together.  I envy them as I sit across the way in my yoga pants and t-shirt that has stains on it.  (To be fair I'm as messy as my kids are so it's a 50-50 chance that I'm the one that got myself that nice big ol' stain you see on whatever I'm wearing) with my hair in a pony tail watching my kids search the floor for stray cheetos.  Oh well!  My kids didn't get a "designer mom" they got a plain ol' Walmart mom =).

Have a great day!

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

It is with great regret that I am penning this post.  Monday is the dreaded day.  The day we go back to school. (insert sobbing here)  How is it possible that the summer is gone already?  I mean we have done a lot and made the most of our summer, but still how can it be over already?  I don't want to go back to bedtimes and homework and water bottles and alarm clocks and pencils and back packs and packed lunches.................. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!  (Resigned sigh)
However, like all mere mortals I must relent to these forces and say adios to beaches and sunscreen and roller coasters and sleeping in (insert weeping) and spending the day in my jammas and park days and splash pads......... Sad, sad, sad day...........

Have a great day!

Mani- Pedis

A few weeks ago I took Sweet pea to get her very first mani-pedi.  The salon I took her to has a special pedicure station just for kids.  Oh my word!  It was so adorable and Sweet pea about came out of her skin with how much she loved it.  When we got finished and were about to leave she asked me if we could take the polish off of our toes and do it all over again.  Haha!  I will definitely be taking her to do that again.

Bedtime Stories

One night not too long ago, I had put Sweet pea and Firecracker to bed, then came into the living room and sat down.  After a few minutes Sweet pea came out for some reason.  I told her she needed to go back to bed.  A little while later she came out again.  I got onto her and told her she needed to get into bed and not get back out.  Her response:

"But, Mommy, my booty is keeping me awake!  I keep trying to get it to go to sleep, but it won't.  I'm telling it bedtime stories and singing it songs, but it is keeping me up!"

I had THE HARDEST time trying not to laugh at this excuse.  I'm proud of myself, because I held it together and warned her that she needed to ignore her booty and go to sleep anyway.

I've heard some crazy stuff, but that takes the cake!

Have a great day!

Spreading the Butter

I am all about teaching my kids self sufficiency.  Therefore, both munchkins can make their own frozen waffles and their own bagels.  This makes school mornings easier, and I allow them to make these items snack items occasionally, if we don't have any other food items in the house.

That being said, Sweet pea is great at making her own bagels.  The other day she had one that she was getting ready to butter.  I didn't think anything of it and went into a different room to put something away.  I got side tracked for a few minutes.  When I came back into the kitchen, she had butter all over her hands!  She decided that it was easier to scoop the butter out of the butter dish with her hands and smear it onto the bagel rather than using the knife!!!  Oi vay!  We had A LOT of cleaning up to do to say the least.  What am I going to do with these children?

Have a great day!

Real Soldiers

The other day the kids and I were out running errands.  I had to run to Salvation Army to drop some things off.  When I mentioned to the kids that our next stop was the Salvation Army, Firecracker got all excited and said, "We get to meet real soldiers?!"  It took me a minute to figure out what he was talking about.  Once I realized he thought we were going to see a real army I had to explain the differences between a real army and the Salvation Army.  The whole thing made me laugh so hard.  Gotta love the munchkins

Have a great day!

Remember When?

Sweet pea has hit a stage I didn't know was actually a thing.  (Maybe it's not, maybe it's just her.  I don't know, all I know is it's a thing with Sweet pea.)  She is constantly asking me, "Mommy, remember when...?"   And inevitably it's something that has happened within the last 24 hours.  Most likely it is something that has happened in the last hour.  Here is an example of a conversation just after going to the store:

Sweet pea: Mommy
Me: Yes
Sweet pea: Do you remember when we were at the store?
Me: Yes it was just a few minutes ago
Sweet pea: I liked it there
etc. etc.

I really don't get it, but whatever.

Have a great day!

Cabinet Climbing

A few posts ago I promised you some stories about my children's crazy antics.  Hold onto your horses, because here is a doozy.

The kids and I were at the school.  I was finishing up my teacherly duties for the day.  Firecracker went into a room where we keep a supply cabinet.  He was in there for awhile, but I didn't really think anything about it.  All the sudden I heard a loud CRASH.  I panicked thinking he had somehow pulled the large cabinet onto himself.

When I opened the door I realized he was fine, he had only knocked a container off the wall.  I asked him what he was doing that he knocked the container off the wall.  He didn't reply, so I asked him again.  Finally, he opened his mouth and showed me the remnants of a piece of chocolate candy.  I was flabbergasted, because the only chocolate candy in that room was on top of the 7 ft tall cabinet!!

Obviously, my little stinker climbed up, grabbed the box, snagged himself a chocolate and then managed to knock the container off the wall on the way down.  I scolded him big time, made him spit out the candy and then apologize to the principal, who happens to be my mother, for stealing.  He got into big trouble at home too, because even though it was just a candy, it was still stealing and that's NOT acceptable behavior no matter how small the item.

Now that the whole thing is months behind us, my family (the adults anyway) has a good chuckle at the incident.  At the time however, it took me a long time to get my panicked mommy heart to calm down, because Firecracker could have killed himself!

Have a great day!

It Must Be Frustrating

Have you ever thought about the fact that it must be super frustrating for police officers in marked cars to drive down the road?  They constantly get boxed in by people doing slightly under the speed limit for fear they will end up with a ticket.  If it was me that would drive me absolutely nutty!  Just a random thought that is running around in my crazy brain today.  I thought I'd share it with you!  Now whenever you're driving near a police officer you'll notice just what I'm talking about.

Have a great day!

Happy Independence Day!

Have you ever thought about the fact that if our forefathers never signed the Declaration of Independence and started the war that we would be speaking with an English accent right now?  Just a little thought for you on this wonderful day where we celebrate our freedoms.

I am so thankful for our country and the freedoms that we have.  I am also thankful for all those who do and have fought for our freedoms.

Have a great day!

Wowzers, Long Time No See...

Ok, so I knew I'd been lax about my posts and that I hadn't done one in a long time, but I didn't realize it had been 9 months!  Holy cow bells!  How in the world have you people lived without me?!  I'm so sorry! ;)

I could give you a lot of reasons/ excuses as to why I haven't done any posts, but I'm not.  Let's just leave it at "Life is crazy busy during the school year, and Ms. T sometimes is in a depression made worse by the craziness and so doesn't even want to think about having another thing to do".  Mmmmkay?

For reals, I'm sorry and I'll try to do better.  The good news is I have a TON of posts that I'll be writing here in the not so distant future about my crazy kids and their antics.  There are some whoppers in there too, let me just tell ya.

Ta ta for now,
Ms. T
