Big Boy Bed Saga Continued

You remember when I posted a few days ago about my big boy bed dilemma?  Well, the saga continued this last weekend.  The Hubs and I had decided to go ahead and put Firecracker into the big boy bed in about a month or so.  It would give us time to psych Firecracker up about it, and give me time to hunt down a deal on a bed set. Great plan right?

Firecracker had other ideas.  Saturday he was in his room playing happily, the Hubs needed to get something and went into his room and called me to come in.  The Firecracker had climbed into his crib and then was attempting to climb back out when the Hubs busted him.  That was the last straw.  Time had come.

So after nap time we went to Walmart and bought Firecracker a bed set (and paid full price!  Ugh!).  We came home, washed it, set up his new bed and held our breath that there would be no messes to clean up in the morning.

Firecracker did splendidly!  He followed the rules, stayed in his bed, and when he woke up he called for us to come and get him!!!  He did the same thing at nap time on Sunday!  This Mama is so proud!

I'm not saying we're out of the woods yet, because I am not that naive.  I know there may be days when Firecracker decides to disobey and get out of bed whenever he wants, but this is a HUGE milestone.  One that Firecracker just stepped over like it was another day.  He is growing up too fast.  Time, slow down!  Before long he's not going to want me to kiss him anymore, because "the guys are watching, Mom".  Which makes my Mama heart sad.

But I choose to not think about that right now.  I choose to think about what an amazing trooper I have!  He's amazing =).

I hope you all have a great day!

Ms. T

P.s. thank you all that gave me advice on what to do about the big boy bed situation.  I appreciate it.  And we are implementing the whole baby gate in front of the door just as an extra measure for now.

Life Before....

There are days that I wonder "what did I do before I had children?"  Honestly, sometimes I can't remember.  What did I do when I wasn't sweeping up Cheerios, cleaning spit up off the floors or picking up the same toys again and again?

I'll tell ya, I stayed out late, watched whole movies IN THE THEATER without worrying about baby sitters, exercised and worked outside the home.

You know what though?  I wouldn't trade all the uninterrupted movies in the world for just one laugh from Sweet Pea  or Firecracker telling me, "love too, Mom" (translated "love you too, Mom").

I don't mind the cleaning, or the noise, because my life is better now.  I had a good life before, but I didn't know what was waiting for me in the after =).  This is my "happily ever after".

I hope you have a great day!

A Proud Parenting Moment

This last Wednesday the Firecracker received "The Puggle of the Month"* award at our church.  I was proud of the little man.  Now, I understand that to be the Puggle of the month all you really have to do is show up and not kill anyone, but hey, some days it seems like that's a stretch.  Needless to say I was proud.

Firecracker can be a handful sometimes, but I love him all the time.  Even with a Mother's love there are some days...... that well I don't know what to do with him (to put it tamely).  And then there are days like last Wednesday, where I just want to squeeze the stuffing out of him and tell him how proud I am of him.

I thought you'd all like to know that my little Firecracker is one good cookie =).

*You may be asking yourself what in the world a Puggle is.  Well, a Puggle is a baby Platypus.  Our church does a program called AWANA for the children and every age group has their own name.  2-3s are Puggles, 3-4s are Cubbies etc.

I hope you have a great day!

5 Question Friday!

Today is Friday and that means that the weekend is just a few hours away!  Yay!!  It also means that today is 5 question Friday =)

As always thanks to Mama M. for letting us link up =)

1. Do you swim in the winter?

No, not really.  It’s not that I couldn’t.  The weather here is fabulous right now and swimming would not be out of the question.  But I’m not a great swimmer, and drowning doesn’t sound like a lot of fun.  So nope, I don’t swim in the winter.

2. Do you love or hate winter?

Hmmmm this depends.  I despise snow.  A LOT!  I could write you a long post about my true, deep, long lingering hatred for the snow, but I will spare you from that and just leave it at “I hate snow”.  Thankfully, where I live we almost never get snow.  It is one of those “happens every 20 years” things.  Did I tell you that I love where I live?  Cuz it doesn’t snow here =).  Anyway, as long as there is no snow involved I don’t mind winter.  It is a nice change from heat.  But I’m not going to complain about the heat….. because that means it doesn’t snow ;)

3. Do you put makeup/actual clothes on when you know you're going to be home all day with just family?

You do realize that I’m home all day nearly every day right?  Because that’s my job.  Stay at home, make sure the kids stay alive, don’t get hurt, have good manners, don’t maim anyone else.  On top of all that I have to do the cleaning and the LAUNDRY.  So why would I add to my pile?  Normally, if I’m gonna hang at home with just the munchkins I stay in my p.j.s while I clean.  Then when the munchkins nap I shower and dress.  I want to be somewhat presentable when the Hubs gets home.

4. How old were you when you had your first alcoholic beverage?

Uhhhh older than 29, because I’m currently 29 and have yet to partake.  I have an extremely addictive personality, it’s why I read a book that’s 400 pages long in a day and a half (maybe 2 days).  It’s also why I have a hard time backing away from cake.   I know that if I got started on something as addicting as alcohol I’d become an alcoholic in no time flat.  So I steer clear.  That goes with smoking and drugs too just in case you were wondering.

5. How many ill calls in a 12 month period do you think are acceptable?
I’d say 5 or 6.  Unless you’re in the hospital or something… I don’t know if this is even close to what would really be acceptable, because I have been out of the work force for about 3 years now and I don’t remember how many sick days I used to get.  Also, when I was working I was a teacher (which means getting 2 to 3 months off in the summer).  So if I got sick then I didn’t have to call in I just stayed in bed with my crackers, sprite, blanket and the t.v. remote.

Appointments... Who Knew?

Yesterday I went to have blood work done.  I don't know about you, but I loathe going to have blood work done.  It's not so much that I hate needles, or the sight of blood, that stuff doesn't really bother me.  I just despise sitting in the waiting room for 2 hours while the 2 people they have in the back that are supposed to be working are really playing online poker, or something.  (Ok, so maybe they really are working, just really, really slowly...)

I tried something new this time though.  I went online and made an appointment a few days in advance.  Believe it or not I was in and out of the lab in 20 minutes!  You could have kocked me over with a feather.

Lesson learned.  From now on whenever I need to have blood work done I will be making an appointment!  No more waiting for hours in the waiting room waiting for the workers to win or lose their online poker game.  Ahhh the freedom appointments give =).

Have a great day!

My Big Brother

My big brother is one of "those" people.  You know "those" people that are nutty, fun-loving, crazy, silly, corny, so quick witted it makes you want to kick them, geeky (seriously, he can remember how many dimples are on a golf ball.  WHY?  I don't know) and well, just about every body's best friend.

Today is my big brother's birthday.  The day many, many, many (hahaha) moons ago that this world went from being an average, normal place to a place that contains this crazy person that can make Ebeneezer Scrooge smile.

So today, I celebrate my insane brother's existence, because without him, I wouldn't have one of my amazing sisters in law and an amazing niece and nephew.  =)  Just kidding, I do love him.  It would be a much sadder, duller, grayer world without the colorful character known as my big brother.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BRO!!  I love ya!

Doesn't he looked thrilled in this pic? ;)

I hope you all have a great my brother's birthday!

Dancing in the Kitchen

Another story about O and Firecracker ;).  See another upside of having O here to visit is that I have plenty of stories to put on the blog ;).

The other day I started playing some fun kiddie music on the computers for the boys to listen to.  Before I knew it they were trying to sing along and they were dancing all crazy.  It was so cute!!!  I couldn't help myself, I joined in too.

The three of us had a crazy, nobody cares that you look like you're having a seizure, dance party in the kitchen.  It was a great time and by the end of it we were all giggling and out of breath (at least I was, I'm sure the 2 1/2 year olds have more energy than I do).

It was a great time, and a memory I'll keep for a long long time.  I love these little men and all the fun we have together.

Have a great day!

Hide and Seek

Is hide and seek fun if you hide in the exact same place every time?  A poll of 2- 2 1/2 year olds proves that YES it is fun to hide in the same place every time.  Thank you for your interest =).

When O was over the other day and we went outside the boys decided to play hide and seek.  We only have one tree in our yard and we have no bushes or anything else just a lot of grass.  It doesn't make for a lot of hiding places.

The lack of hiding places didn't discourage these two sweet little men though!  They just took turns hiding behind the tree and then laughing and laughing when the other one found them.

This just shows that the world of a child is wonderful and full of fun things, even when an adult sees nothing but one tree and a lot of grass =).

Have a great day!

If Love Were Measured in Weeds and Dead Grass

If Love were measured in weeds and dead grass I would be soooooo loved.  I don't think anyone in the world could keep up!

O is over visiting and playing again today.  Firecracker, O and I went outside to play during Sweet Pea's nap time.  While we were out there the boys decided to pick weeds.  They like the shapes of them and the colors are fun too.  I'm not sure why the dead grass caught their attention, but it did.

Before I knew it my lap was covered in weeds and dead grass.  I know you're all jealous!  I'm sure the Hubs will lament this post as he strives to keep the weeds out of our yard completely.  Oh well, it gives the boys something to do... aside from play in the sand box, or with the tee ball set, or the football, or the soccer ball.  Don't you feel bad for how little they have to do? ;)

Have a great day!

Big Boy Bed

Firecracker will be 3 in March and currently he is still sleeping in his crib.  I know that seems ridiculous to some, but he has never tried to climb out.  I'm happy that he's contained, because he will wake up at 3 or 4 every morning and lay in there talking for a bit before he goes back to sleep.

I fear that when he gets into that big boy bed he will not stay in the bed.  Especially when he wakes up at 3.  Will he decide to get into the pantry and paint my walls with peanut butter?  Will he decide to come out and play with the dvd player and destroy it?  Will he climb on a stool onto our kitchen counter and get to the knives?

I can't tell what is normal fear and what is brought on by the post partum.  Some of these fears are normal right?

On the other side, he's out grown the pack and play.  So when we travel he's all smushed up and uncomfortable.  I'm not about to let him sleep uncontained when we're gone when he's never done that at home....

What to do, what to do?  If it were your child what would you do?

5 Question Friday!

1.    Where do you hide the reeeeally good snacks?
It depends…. If they are snacks that I think are really good, but the Hubs doesn’t care for then they go right in the normal pantry.  If they are snacks that I want to save for a special occasion and we both like them I hide them in the freezer in the garage.  Shhhh don’t tell the Hubs ;).
2.    Do you keep your vehicle clean or am I the only one that has things falling out of their van?
Dear me... I do attempt to keep my van clean, but most of the time I fail miserably!  Between the toys, water bottles, snacks and papers the Firecracker brings home from church it's hard.  Maybe once Sweet Pea can walk I'll have more hands and be able to keep it cleaner?  I hope!
    3.    Have you ever been to Vegas?
Nope.  I think it would be fun to go and the Hubs and I toyed with the idea of going there and eloping when we were getting married, but we went through with the more formal ceremony.
4.    Warm room light blankets or cold room warm snuggly blankets?
Before Sweet Pea arrived we did the cold room snuggly blankets and put a space heater into Firecracker’s room.  Since he doesn’t know how to stay under the covers.  Now, we just turn up the heat in the whole house, because 2 space heaters would leach so much energy there would be no point.
5.    What is the worst airplane/ travel experience you’ve ever had?
I don’t think this is a good question for me, because I am not a particularly huge fan of travelling.  Not to say I don’t enjoy going places, because I do.  Getting there is the not so fun part.  I despise driving in the car for long periods with small children.  And flying presents its own set of challenges.  Someday travelling will get easier again.  Right?

Have a great day!

Buzz Lightyear

We have a new addition to the family.  His name is Buzz Lightyear.  Lately, the Firecracker has become obsessed with Toy Story.  He loves all the characters, but has become especially taken with Buzz.

Firecracker runs around the house making zooming sounds and telling us that he is Buzz Lightyear.  He says he comes from space.  Sometimes if you call him by his name he will correct you and say, "no, Mom, I Buzz Lightyear!"

As part of Firecracker's insistance that he is Buzz Lightyear he likes to look at the stars.  While we are out looking at the stars Firecracker says, "my stars, my space I Buzz!"

Buzz Lightyear has saved our family from many catastrophes ;).  I love it!  I love his little imagination.  It astounds me daily how imaginitive he can be.

Excitement!!!

Firecracker is soooo excited!  He has missed his friend, O.  O is a sweet, little man that was born nearly a month to the day before Firecracker.  O's Mommy and I are good friends and therefore Firecracker and O spend a lot of time together.

With the Holidays and the rush that comes along with them and the unexpected trip I took up to Alabama last week Firecracker hasn't seen O in at least a month.  When I stopped to think about it I don't know if they have ever gone this long without seeing eachother.  Maybe, but if they have it's a very rare occurrence.

All that to say that for weeks Firecracker has been asking to have O come to our house.  Today is the day!  O will be here any minute and Firecracker is super excited!!!  I love how much these little guys love eachother.  I hope they are always great friends.

I imagine them always in the same class at school, having eachother's backs on the play ground, eating lunch together, playing sports together and just being great friends in general.  I hope so.

Have a great day!

Hair

I love, love, love to have my hair played with.  It's so relaxing and just feels good.  Well, last night Firecracker wanted to play with my hair.

I was excited thinking, "yes, he's finally to the age where playing with my hair will be fun for both of us!"  I couldn't have been more wrong.... well, I guess I could have, but that would have required scissors, hair dye and a maimed monkey (don't get mad at me, PETA, I don't make the rules!).

Firecracker started out innocently enough, gently moving my hair side to side and then running his fingers through it at one point.  This made me smile!  Then he started yanking and pulling (not because he wanted to inflict pain, but because he thought it would be funny.).  That's when the "let's play with Mommy's hair" time ended.

Lesson 7,899: unless Mommy wants a migraine do not allow the 2 1/2 year old to play with your hair.  Man, I'm learning a lot being a Mom! =)

Hope you have a great day!

Good Intentions

I got up yesterday morning with every intention of making it to church on time for Sunday School.  The Hubs and I love our Sunday School class it's one of the high lights of our week.  However, things derailed quickly once I walked into Firecracker's room.

He had an accident during the night =(.  It's been so long that he's been potty trained and hasn't had any accidents that it took me completely by surprise!  Much cleaning and a bath time later we were running late, but it was still manageable.  I went in to rouse the Hubs to enlist his help (as is customary on Sunday mornings) with getting the kids ready.

The Hubs was sick! Another boo =(!  Poor guy!  I did end up making it to church for the morning worship service, but having to dress, feed and corral both kids, when I only left enough time to care for one severely altered my plans for Sunday School.

Oh well, God loves me anyway, and He knows that I had good intentions!

Have a great day!

Already

I'm already compiling my stash for this year's Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes.  Now is the time!  I encourage you to learn more about this program and attempt to fill at least one box.

This is the time of year, if you don't mind holding on to things for 10 months in the back of some closet.  I start buying little Christmas themed toys and pencils for super cheap, because normal people don't want Christmas merchandise 11 months in advance! (Told you I wasn't normal)

I pick up things after Valentine's day, Easter and Halloween too.  Spending roughly 5.00 after each holiday.  (You'd be surprised how much you can get for 5.00 when everything is 75% off).  Once it's time for shoe boxes to be turned in all I do is go and buy a few filler items such as candy and tooth brushes.  Put all my stuff into my boxes and then wait til after Christmas to start the whole thing over again ;).

Have a great day!

Cousins

Cousins are special people.  They love you like family (because they are), but play with you like friends.  Cousins fight with you like siblings, but when you're not around miss you terribly.

I grew up many states away from my cousins and only got to see them about once a year.  Therefore, we didn't have the relationship that cousins that grow up down the street from one another have.

I have always said I wanted my kids to know their family better than I got to know mine.  Spending the night at their Grandparent's house, hanging out with cousins, hanging out with Aunts and Uncles...

It does my heart good to know that Firecracker already loves his cousins.  He gets to see some of his cousins on a regular basis.  Unfortuantely, my whole family and the Hubs family do not live in a 3 mile radius like I would choose if I could.  Some of my siblings live many states away while others live closer, but too far to see on all the time.  However, he does get to see them more than once a year.

I love to watch the Firecracker and his cousins interact.  It warms my heart.  They are going to have such a special relationship and be there for each other when no one else is.

Hope you have a great day!

Wise Beyond Years

I have this little boy.  He is 7 years old.  He is funny, energetic, silly, compassionate, caring, and smart.
Over the last 7 years, we have worked really hard to raise a polite, responsible, caring, honest little human.  (Pssst... raising kids is hard work, especially if you don't let them get away with everything!)

Anyway, sometimes I just wonder if the things that I say and do actually take hold in his little heart and mind.  More often than not, I think that what I have been trying to teach is going in one ear and out the other.

Today, however, I was proven wrong.  Happily proven wrong, at that.

I got home from work, and started asking The Boy how his first day back at school went.  See, I started work over the holiday break, so this is a new beginning for us all.  The Hubs is driving him to and from school, and our routine has been altered quite a bit.  Well, I found out that The Boy hadn't started his homework yet, so we sat down and began the process.

I pulled out his agenda first.  (An agenda, for those of you that don't know, is a journal-type book that the teacher uses to communicate how your child is doing in school on a daily basis.  Behavior, studies, upcoming events, etc.)  In bright red ink, I found this note from the teacher:

"In class today, we created a journal page.  The first question was 'What was your favorite gift that you got for Christmas?'  His answer was : Love.  The next question was 'Who was it from?'.  His answer was: From my mom.  I was very impressed.  Every other child in my class named a toy as their favorite gift.  Good job, Mom!"

I almost cried.  He got it!  I was so terribly worried that with all the financial stress we were enduring, that he would feel cheated somehow at Christmas.  God provided and we were able to get the kids most of the things on their rather small lists, but I was so worried that he would be upset that a couple of bigger items weren't under the tree.

I couldn't be prouder of my little man.  The hard work has not been in vain.

Have a great day!

Couponing

I am an avid coupon lover.  Now, I'm not one of those psycho people that goes and buys 1,294 boxes of rice and puts it into their basement for a rainy day.  Mainly, because well, I don't have the space for that, not to mention I don't think I'd use that much rice even if it rained every day for a year!

I do love to hunt the good deals down though.  I have been planning to share some couponing tips here with you.  However, sadly lately there have been very few deals.  So just know that eventually when the coupon deals start to come along again I will be sharing with you all.  If you don't care that's cool, but I know there are some of you out there that would love the tips so I'll keep you updated!

Have a great day!

A Good Book (Part 2)

I am done reading "The Help".  I promised when I was done I would write a review on the book.  Well, here it is:

"The Help" is a very good book.  I enjoyed it so much!  The author has a way of making you feel like you're in the room with the characters.

The characters are diverse and colorful.  You want to love them or hate them, really there isn't any in between.

As for the story line itself, it is enthralling.  I became so wrapped up in the story I couldn't put the book down.  Everytime I had to do something else I would find myself wondering what the next turn would be in the story line. (A mark of an excellent book in my humble opinion.)

There you go, a non-spoiling, honest review.  Sorry if you wanted more of a book report.  I'm not all about giving away the ending ;).

Hope you all have a great day!

Grief

I have a very good friend who lost her Mom Wednesday very unexpectedly.  My heart aches for her.  My Mom, who is here visiting and also knew the woman well, and I went to my friend's house to try and comfort her.  We wanted to show her how much we love her.

Our grief took many forms. We hugged on my friend and cried with her.  Oh did we cry.  We talked about good memories of her mom and laughed a little.  We reminisced about her cooking, she made the best cakes you would ever taste. We talked about their last conversation.  And we cried some more.

Today, I have spilled more tears for my friend.  I love her dearly and can't even imagine the pain that she is experiencing right now.  The relationship between Mother and Daughter is such a special one.  One that cannot be duplicated.

If you are able to, go hug your Mom today.  Love on her, tell her you love her.  Never take your Mom for granted.

I hope you all have a good, love filled day!

A Good Book

I love to read.  I don't do it very often though, because when I get into a good book I feel like a bad housekeeper.  I get so enthralled with the book that I don't want to put it down.  I'd rather read another chapter than clean the bathroom or do the dishes.  And I'd much rather read than do the laundry.... goodness, who wouldn't rather do almost anything than the laundry?!

On the mothering front I don't do much better.  I find that when I'm reading a good book the Firecracker watches more t.v. than I normally would allow, because it entertains him and I can read.  See, now you're thinking it's a good thing I don't read much too.  Ha ha ha!

Well, the Hubs knows that I've been wanting to read, "The Help" for some time now, but haven't allowed myself to do it.  Last night when he came home he brought me a present =).  He put a sweet card on it and then said, "you can't open this til tomorrow!"  Talk about getting to me!  I jumped out of bed this morning (ok, ok more like crawled out, geesh ), and opened my present and what awaited me?  "The Help"!!!  What an awesome Hubs!!!  Do you wonder why I love him?

Needless to say, I've started reading it and I'll be writing a review when I'm done.  However, it's hooked me for sure.  I have a feeling my house won't be super clean this week.... although I am making a concerted effort to make sure to play with the Firecracker so Iwon't win the "awful Mommy of the year" award.

Hope you all have a great day =)

Major Boar

I don't know if you have seen any of the shows on TV about the Wild Boars or Hogs that are taking over the state of Florida, but I have.  I actually find these shows somewhat entertaining, but think that they probably are blowing the hog population a little out of proportion.  I still think they are somewhat entertaining, and they make me think that Ms. T and I should go into the Hog Huntin' business.  I haven't run that by her yet, but I am pretty sure she would be cool with it.

So anyway, this morning, on my way to work, I came face to face with my very own Monster Hog.  Ok, ok, it was more like Snout to Grill (and by Grill I mean about 6 feet away from my car).  This joker was big!  And from all my Hog-show-watching experience, I would say this hog weighed in at between 150-200 pounds!  Wowzer!  That's like one of me in Pig Size, which is kind of like dog years but only in pounds, not years.

This hog was not alone either.  There were about 4-5 other hogs hanging out right at the tree line, while this lead hog was testin' out the road.  I think that they were like the Hog Support Group, or maybe they were like a bunch of West Side Story Hogs and there was a whole lot of snapping going on once I passed by.  But really, I think they were about to perform their very own Pig rendition of Grease (because what do you get when you fry up bacon? That's right.).  And I was staring down The John Travolta of Hogs.

At first, I was like, "Where's my gun?", but then I remembered that I'm not in Georgia anymore, Toto.  So then, I was like, "It's John Travolta, maybe I can get an autograph!"  But that didn't work out either.  In the end, I didn't even take a picture to share with you all.  I just drove on and let them get back to singing "You're the One That I Want" in their spandex leggings that I am sure they were waiting to change into as soon as I gave them their privacy.

In the end, it just made for an eventful drive to work!

Hope you had a good one today!

Imagination

The Firecracker impresses me with his imagination some times.  He really is a little sponge that absorbs everything he's exposed to right now.  Which is awesome, and a little bit scary to me.

After reading the story of Peter Pan and Captian Hook, Firecracker is constantly telling me to, "get on the boat, Mom!  Tick- Tock- Crock is in the water and coming!" (Wherever he is sitting at the moment is the boat).

Another example would be Firecracker tells me he is "Lightning Mcqueen, Mom is Mater".  Then we proceed to run around the house and obviously Mom has to be slower, because Mom is Mater.... duh!

We role play alot: Larry Boy and the giant lie (from Larry Boy and the Fib from Outerspace, a Veggie Tales movie that if you haven't seen you should! It's a great movie that teaches kids it's never ok to lie), Buzz and Woody, Phineas and Ferb I could go on, but because you don't really care for sake of time I won't.

It's really neat to me to see my Firecracker using his imagination.  It is something so few kids have any more.  It makes me smile!

Wishing you an imaginative day!
